Gervonta Davis knocks out Leo Santa Cruz

News

Gervonta Davis wins back his old WBA super-featherweight world title, stopping Leo Santa Cruz in the sixth round with a devastating uppercut

Gervonta Davis adds the WBA (Super) super featherweight title to his WBA (Regular) lightweight title with a sensational victory at the Alamodome, San Antonio.

Davis knocked out four-weight world champion, Léo Santa Cruz, with a spectacular uppercut in the sixth round of the world title contest. Up to that point, it had been an even affair, with Santa Cruz perhaps even looking to take control after a strong fifth round. But Tank once again showed his fight-ending power, landing a beautifully timed left uppercut that had Santa Cruz out before he'd even hit the canvas.

The knockout, which takes Davis' undefeated record to 24-0, was his 23rd out of the 24 fights - an impressive feat for a boxer in his weight class.

After the fight, Davis told reporters:
"The first couple of rounds I was still . . . I was a little cold because there were shots he touched me with that I ain't supposed to get touched with, but . . . I started warming up, I started settling down, I started listening to Floyd and my coach  and things like that . . . Floyd was telling me just calm down, we gonna get him."

For Santa Cruz, the loss is only his second in 40 fights. The one other loss came via majority decision to Ireland's Carl Frampton back in 2016.

Santa Cruz took to Twitter early this morning to confirm that he is in good health and to congratulate Davis on his win.
