Former undisputed champion Cecilia Brækhus will take advantage of a rematch clause in a bid to avenge her only career defeat

Cecilia Brækhus suffered her first and only loss last month at the hands of Jessica McCaskill and after speculation of a Brækhus retirement, Matchroom Boxing has confirmed that the former champion will invoke the rematch clause, with a  second fight expected to take to place early in 2021.

The first fight back in August saw McCaskill lay claim to the undisputed welterweight championship which included belts held by Brækhus since 2009.

After losing to Katie Taylor in her first world title bid at lightweight, McCaskill went on to unify the WBA and WBC belts at super lightweight before moving up to welterweight to challenge Brækhus.

It was Brækhus' 26th title defence and should she have been successful she would have broken the record currently held by heavyweight legend Joe Louis for the most consecutive title defences in one weight class.
Brækhus was extremely humble in defeat but has since suggested that she wasn't at her best on the night, telling Matchroom: "It was my weakest performance in my whole career, and I still feel I won or could have gotten a draw."

"When I thought about that I knew I would beat her in a rematch in a fight where I would be me, myself 100% you know and I didn't wanna go out with career-worst performance either... I feel I definitely owe that to my fans."

"I learned how good I am, I mean I was in bad shape and I still feel like I beat a great fighter like McCaskill, so my self-esteem is very high now."

"We don't want 3 American judges next time... If I fight in America I probably think I will have to get that knock out for sure."

McCaskill called it "The fastest retirement I've ever seen in boxing history".

She said: "She's back. We definitely called it, we knew she would be back and it would only be a matter of time and usually, those type of conversations directly after a fight is to direct the audience's eyes away fro the loss."

A second win over Brækhus would set up a huge potential rematch with former foe and undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor, a fight that McCaskill has been extremely vocal about pursuing.

Taylor last fought in week 4 four of Matchroom's Fight Camp back in August where she successfully defended her belts in a gruelling rematch with Delphine Persoon.
