Cheeseman gets the decision over Eggington

Ted Cheeseman edges out Sam Eggington in gruelling 12 rounder.

"Egg and Cheese" topped the bill at the opening weekend of Matchroom's  Fight Camp on Saturday night and what a way it was to begin the series of events.

Nobody could pick a winner going into this one - we all expected a close fight, knowing that both would give it their all, and neither man disappointed.

Eggington started well, looking comfortable for the first round and a half. Midway through the second, he began connecting with some heavy shots but in doing so left himself open for a counter that rocked him back on his heels.

Cheeseman, seeing that his opponent was hurt, went to work on pinning Eggington against the ropes and for a moment it looked as though we could have been in for an early night. Eggington needed to hold and regain composure but instead dropped his gloves and smiled, only inviting more punishment from Cheeseman.

Although able to finish the round on his feet, the comfort that Eggington had enjoyed at the start of the match was now non-existent. For the next few rounds, he fought on bravely, giving as good as he got, but looked ragged at times, with Cheeseman coming off slightly better.

From Round 6 onwards it became harder to score with Eggington seeming to have to regained composure. Both men were doing some great work on the inside, trading blows back and forth. A soon as momentum began to swing in one mans favour the other would step on the gas and it would swing right back.

The brutal in-fighting continued right up until the twelfth round where, for a moment, Eggington looked to have Cheeseman in trouble, landing some big blows in the centre of the ring. However, keeping with the temper of the fight Cheesman shook it off and fired right back.

When the bell rang, both men immediately broke into smiles and wrapped arms around each other in the centre of the ring - always a fantastic sight at the end of such a savage encounter.
The Judges scored it 115-114, 116-113 and 116-113, all in favour of Cheeseman who no doubt picked up enough of the early rounds to secure the win.

Eggington will be deeply disappointed after putting so much into this one, but will perhaps have learned something from that second round in which his refusal to give ground and hold when hurt may have cost him the fight.
