Devin Haney successfully defends his WBC world title against Yuriorkis Gamboa at the Hard Rock Live, Hollywood, with a shutout performance that saw him winning every round on two of the Judges scorecards.
It was a dominant performance from Haney against a decent opponent, but he'll no doubt be disappointed not to have gotten the stoppage that he predicted.
With lightweight rivals Teófimo López and Gervonta Davis recording massive wins in their latest outings, Haney was looking to keep his name in the mix by making a statement against Gamboa. However, while a shut out is impressive, fans (and rivals), will have expected more from Haney against an ageing opponent who, in previous fights, has shown unsteady legs and a less than solid chin. Despite winning every round, Haney never really had Gamboa in any trouble throughout a match that failed to catch fire.
We mustn't be too critical of Haney though - of course, we'd all like to have seen him go through the gears a bit to force a stoppage, or even score just one knockdown, but Haney isn't a power puncher, and there is more to boxing than knockouts. The fact is, although Haney was unable to hurt Gamboa, he was able to completely nullify his offence, a skill that could prove more valuable than power when facing big punchers like López or Davis.
Haney's record now stands at 25-0, with the win being his second successful title defence, and while he may not have struck fear into the hearts of his opponents, he has at the very least kept himself relevant as one of the top names at the weight.
