Ritson vs Vazquez fight result: Points win for Ritson

Lewis Ritson returned to the ring last night, labouring to a split decision win against Mexico's Miguel Vazquez

Fighting for the first time since October last year, Lewis Ritson (22-1) went head to head with experienced campaigner, and former world champion, Miguel Vázquez (42-10), earning himself a somewhat unconvincing split-decision over 12 rounds.

Vázquez gave Ritson a tough night despite having had just two wins from his previous five fights and having many miles on his clock.

Ritson was unable to make a dent in Vázquez who boxed well on the back foot and gave the Newcastle man plenty to think about in every round.

The judges were split in their opinions, scoring it 116-113 Vasquez, 117-111 Ritson and 115-113 Ritson, and they weren't the only ones who couldn't agree on a victor. While some onlookers on social media felt Ritson had done enough to steal the fight, Matchroom boss, Eddie Hearn, took to Twitter to announce that he thought Vázquez had edged it.

With the win, Ritson moves his record to 21-1, with the only loss coming against Francesco Patera back in 2018 at lightweight. Since then, Ritson has won 4 fights in a row up at super lightweight. However, while he'd made a name for himself as a knockout artist at lightweight, his victories of late have been less convincing and based on last night's performance, the division's top names won't be hearing any alarm bells.

After the fight, Ritson said: " . . . very frustrating being out of the ring a year and then with that style it was probably more open than what I thought it was gonna be and the more the fight went on, the more frustrated I was getting".

"It was a big eye-opener, you know like, we've been mentioning the Prograis fight, and he's been mentioning us I think, but obviously tonight was a bit of an eye-opener that we're probably a million miles off that now so, we need a couple more fights like Vázquez ."
