Spence vs Garcia: Errol Spence Jr. with a dominant points win

Errol Spence Jr. retains his WBC and IBF world welterweight titles with an impressive points victory against Danny Garcia

WBC and IBF world champion Errol Spence Jr. retains his unbeaten record with a unanimous decision against former two-weight world champion Danny Garcia. While the fight remained competitive from start to finish, Spence was able to keep himself on top for the most part by outworking and out landing Garcia.

Garcia, a naturally defensive counter-puncher who has made a career of capitalising on chinks in his opponents' armour, was unable to make his game plan work against Spence. While there were flashes of Garcia brilliance, with the occasional counter getting through, for anyone scoring the fight, it was difficult to give him more than a couple of rounds as he was often backed up and beaten to the punch.

Entering the fight on the back of a layoff that last saw him fight in September 2019, and recently having recovered from a potentially fatal car crash, there were question marks over Spence's conditioning. But the time out of the ring appeared not to have had any effect on him. Spence fought a near-perfect fight, applying consistent pressure while using jabs and body shots to offset Garcia and prevent him from getting his counters off.

Post-fight, Garcia's father and coach, Angel was vocal in his disappointment at Danny's work rate, feeling that his son let the rounds slip away by showing Spence too much respect and not letting his hands go. For Garcia, this was his third consecutive loss in a welterweight world title fight, having fallen short against Shawn Porter in 2018 and Keith Thurman in 2017.

The win against Garcia helps Spence to cement his place as one of the top two welterweights on the planet, with WBO champion Terrence Crawford holding the other top-spot. Crawford, who recently stopped Kell Brook in four rounds, is widely regarded as the biggest threat to Spence, and a clash between the two would present one of the most lucrative match-ups to in world boxing. However, despite Crawford making an appearance at the fight, and media pushing Spence for a comment on a potential encounter, the WBC and IBF champion refused to enter into discussion on the subject.
