Tyrone McKenna vs Ohara Davies: Points win for Davies

MTK Global

Ohara Davies outpoints Tyrone McKenna in their golden contract super-lightweight final

The final round of MTK Global's Golden Contract super-lightweight tournament saw London's Ohara Davies take on Tyrone McKenna of Belfast. After ten close rounds, the judges awarded Davies a majority decision, scoring it 95 - 95, 96 - 94 and 96 - 94.

On route to the final Davies (22 - 2 - 0) stopped both Logan Yoon and Jeff Ofori, while McKenna (21 - 2 - 1) outpointed Mikey Sakyi and Mohamed Mimoune.

McKenna had called Davies out a number of times prior to the tournament but with Davies showing little interest it the fight it took a meeting in the Golden Contract final for McKenna to get his wish.

A stark contrast in styles made for difficult scoring. McKenna looked the sharper boxer, countering well on the backfoot and making Davies miss a lot, but at times just wasn't offering enough offence to win the rounds. Davies, on the other hand, was guilty of loading up and telegraphing his shots, but was, for the most part, the aggressor and landed the more damaging shots.

The win secures Davies the 'Golden Contract' - a five-fight deal with management company, MTK Global. Davies said after the fight: "I know when I'm in top shape, there's no one in the world can match me. I'm coming for everyone now".

Davies won't be the only one putting pen to paper - MTK's Golden Contract featured two other weight classes - featherweight and light-heavyweight. Unfortunately, the featherweight final between Jazza Dickens and Ryan Walsh, scheduled to take place on the same card as Davies vs McKenna, was postponed after Dickens tested positive for Covid-19.

The first of the light-heavyweight semi-finals took place last week and saw Hosea Burton outpointed by Ricards Bolotniks. The second featured on the Davies vs McKenna undercard with Serge Michel stopping Liam Conroy in the fourth round to secure his place in the final alongside Boltniks.
